Train Architecture Manager
We are seeking an experienced Train Architecture Manager to lead the definition and integration of train-level architectures for complex rail vehicle programmes. In this role, you will establish and maintain the overall vehicle architecture, ensuring that systems, subsystems and interfaces work together to meet requirements for safety, performance, reliability, maintainability, passenger experience and cost. You will provide technical leadership across the engineering lifecycle, from early concept development and requirements capture through design maturity, verification, validation and entry into service.
Your responsibilities will include coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams, managing architectural trade-offs, and ensuring that technical decisions are documented, traceable and aligned with programme objectives. You will oversee the development of functional, physical and logical architectures; define system boundaries and interfaces; support configuration and change control; and identify, assess and mitigate technical risks. You will work closely with project management, operations, suppliers, assurance and customer representatives, translating operational needs into robust engineering solutions. The role will also involve reviewing technical deliverables, supporting design reviews, resolving cross-functional issues and contributing to continuous improvement of engineering methods, tools and standards.
Applicants should have substantial experience in rail vehicle, rolling stock or another complex systems engineering environment, with a strong understanding of train architecture and the interaction of mechanical, electrical, control, software, communications and passenger systems. A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, systems engineering or a related discipline is desirable, together with experience leading technical teams and managing interfaces across large programmes. You should be confident working with requirements management, system modelling, safety and assurance processes, and industry standards. Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder-management skills are essential, as is the ability to make sound technical judgements in a changing delivery environment. Experience of modern architecture frameworks, model-based systems engineering and the full train lifecycle would be advantageous.
