Train Cost Leader
We are seeking an experienced Train Cost Leader to provide financial leadership across the development, delivery and ongoing management of rail rolling stock programmes. This is a key role responsible for establishing robust cost management practices, improving financial visibility and supporting informed commercial and operational decisions throughout the train lifecycle. You will work closely with engineering, procurement, project management, operations and commercial teams to ensure cost objectives are understood, achieved and continuously improved.
Your responsibilities will include developing and maintaining programme cost plans, budgets, forecasts and control accounts; monitoring actual and committed costs against approved baselines; and providing clear analysis of variances, risks, opportunities and potential corrective actions. You will lead cost challenge and assurance activities, support change control and estimate impacts, and contribute to investment appraisals, business cases and financial reporting. The role will also involve reviewing supplier and subcontractor costs, supporting contract negotiations, assessing cost trends and ensuring that appropriate governance, controls and audit trails are maintained. You will be expected to produce concise reports and present recommendations to senior stakeholders.
Applicants should have substantial experience in cost management, project controls, financial analysis or commercial management within rail, transport, engineering, manufacturing or another complex asset-intensive environment. A strong understanding of lifecycle costing, earned value, forecasting, risk and change management is essential, along with the ability to interpret detailed financial and technical information. Experience working with major capital projects, rolling stock or systems integration would be advantageous. You will need excellent communication and influencing skills, strong attention to detail and the confidence to challenge assumptions constructively. The ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams, manage competing priorities and deliver accurate information to demanding deadlines is also required. Relevant professional qualifications or membership of a recognised cost, project controls, finance or commercial body would be beneficial.
