Train Control - Control Engineering Group Manager
We are seeking an experienced Train Control – Control Engineering Group Manager to lead the development, delivery and assurance of train control engineering activities across complex rail projects and operational programmes. This role will provide technical leadership for control systems, signalling interfaces, train protection, traffic management and associated operational technologies, ensuring solutions are safe, reliable, compliant and aligned with programme objectives.
Key responsibilities will include managing and mentoring a multidisciplinary team of control engineers; setting technical direction, standards and engineering processes; overseeing requirements capture, systems architecture, design reviews, integration, testing and commissioning; and ensuring effective interfaces between train control systems, rolling stock, infrastructure, telecommunications, power and operations. You will monitor technical risks, resolve complex engineering issues, contribute to programme planning and budgets, and provide clear technical advice to senior stakeholders, project teams, suppliers and delivery partners. The role will also involve supporting procurement, reviewing technical submissions, managing engineering assurance activities and promoting continuous improvement, innovation and knowledge sharing across the function.
Applicants should have substantial experience in train control, signalling, railway systems engineering or a closely related discipline, together with proven experience leading technical teams and delivering complex engineering programmes. A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, control systems, electronics, rail systems or a related subject is desirable, alongside professional registration or demonstrable progress towards it. You will need a strong understanding of railway safety, systems assurance, configuration management, verification and validation, and relevant industry standards and regulations. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, analytical and decision-making skills are essential, as is the ability to balance strategic leadership with detailed technical oversight. Experience of modern train control technologies, automation, traffic management or digital railway systems would be advantageous.
