We are seeking a Traction Power Specialist to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of rail electrification and traction power systems. This role will provide technical expertise across the full asset lifecycle, including design review, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, fault investigation and renewal of traction power equipment. You will work closely with engineering, operations, project delivery and maintenance teams to ensure systems comply with applicable standards, safety requirements and operational objectives.
Key responsibilities include developing and reviewing technical specifications, drawings, calculations, risk assessments and method statements; providing engineering advice on substations, switchgear, transformers, rectifiers, overhead line equipment, third-rail systems, bonding, earthing and return circuits; and supporting inspections, testing and commissioning activities. You will investigate equipment failures and recurring defects, identify root causes, recommend corrective actions and contribute to asset improvement programmes. The role will also involve reviewing contractor deliverables, monitoring technical quality, maintaining accurate engineering records and supporting the development of maintenance strategies, procedures and emergency response plans.
Applicants should have substantial experience in traction power or rail electrical engineering, together with a relevant degree, HNC/HND or equivalent professional qualification. A strong understanding of railway electrical systems, protection and control, earthing and bonding, electrical safety rules and relevant industry standards is essential. Experience of working within multidisciplinary projects, managing technical interfaces and producing clear engineering documentation is highly desirable. You will need excellent analytical, communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound technical decisions in safety-critical environments. A proactive approach, attention to detail and willingness to work on operational sites, including occasional nights or weekends, are also required.
