Testing and Commissioning Lead - Traction Power
We are seeking an experienced Testing and Commissioning Lead to oversee the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of traction power systems across major rail and infrastructure projects. The role will lead testing and commissioning activities from planning and design review through to energisation, dynamic testing, handover and close-out. You will coordinate multidisciplinary teams, specialist subcontractors and project stakeholders to ensure systems are installed, tested and commissioned in accordance with approved designs, technical standards, project programmes and safety requirements.
Key responsibilities will include developing and managing testing and commissioning strategies, plans, procedures, inspection and test plans, and detailed work packages. You will review technical documentation, assess system readiness, coordinate interfaces with civil, signalling, overhead line, depot and control system teams, and manage testing of traction substations, switchgear, protection systems, feeders, return circuits, earthing and bonding arrangements. The successful candidate will lead fault investigation and resolution, ensure test results are accurately recorded, manage non-conformances, support energisation activities and produce complete handover documentation. You will also provide technical leadership to engineers and technicians, chair progress and readiness meetings, and promote a strong culture of safe working.
Applicants should have substantial experience in testing and commissioning traction power or comparable high-voltage railway electrical systems, with a sound understanding of railway standards, electrical safety rules, isolation and permit-to-work processes. A relevant electrical engineering qualification and demonstrable experience leading commissioning teams on complex projects are required. Knowledge of protection testing, relay configuration, HV switching, power quality, SCADA interfaces and commissioning software would be advantageous. You must be highly organised, confident working with clients, contractors and regulators, and able to make informed decisions under programme pressure. The role may involve site-based work, night shifts, weekend possessions and travel between project locations. A commitment to quality, safety, technical excellence and collaborative delivery is essential.
