Railway Power Supply Engineer
We are seeking a Railway Power Supply Engineer to support the design, delivery, operation and maintenance of electrical power systems for rail infrastructure projects. The role will involve working across multidisciplinary teams to ensure that traction power and associated electrical systems are safe, reliable, compliant and fit for operational requirements. You will contribute to projects from early feasibility and concept design through to detailed design, installation, testing, commissioning and handover.
Key responsibilities will include developing and reviewing power supply designs, calculations, specifications, technical reports and drawings; assessing traction substations, feeder stations, overhead line or third-rail interfaces, return circuits, earthing and bonding arrangements; and coordinating interfaces with signalling, telecommunications, civil engineering, rolling stock and operations teams. You will support site surveys, factory and site acceptance testing, commissioning activities and technical investigations. The role will also require you to identify engineering risks, review contractors’ submissions, monitor technical quality, and ensure that work complies with relevant railway standards, electrical regulations, safety procedures and project requirements. Occasional travel to project and operational sites may be required.
Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in electrical engineering, power systems or a related discipline, together with demonstrable experience in railway electrification or high-voltage power supply engineering. A sound understanding of traction power systems, electrical protection, fault levels, load flow, earthing, bonding and safety-critical engineering principles is essential. Experience with design software, power system analysis tools and the preparation or review of technical documentation would be advantageous. You should be confident communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders, capable of managing competing priorities, and committed to delivering accurate, practical solutions. Professional registration or progress towards professional registration is desirable, as is experience working within structured assurance, change control and risk management processes.
