Lead Engineer (Water/Wastewater) Infrastructure

We are seeking an experienced Lead Engineer to manage the design and delivery of complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects. This role will provide technical leadership across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and concept development through to detailed design, construction support, commissioning and handover. You will work closely with clients, contractors, regulators and multidisciplinary project teams to develop practical, sustainable and cost-effective engineering solutions.

Key responsibilities will include leading the planning, design and technical delivery of water and wastewater schemes; preparing and reviewing calculations, specifications, drawings, reports and technical documentation; and ensuring that designs meet applicable legislation, standards, safety requirements and client expectations. You will coordinate engineers, technicians and external consultants, manage technical risks and interfaces, contribute to project programmes and budgets, and provide guidance during procurement and construction. The role will also involve site visits, design reviews, problem-solving, progress reporting and supporting the development of junior team members. You will be expected to promote quality, innovation, sustainability and continuous improvement throughout project delivery.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil, environmental, water or wastewater engineering, together with substantial experience delivering infrastructure projects in the water sector. Professional registration or demonstrable progress towards chartered status is desirable. Strong technical knowledge of water and wastewater treatment, pipelines, pumping stations, utilities, drainage or related infrastructure is essential, along with experience using relevant design standards and engineering software. You will need excellent communication, stakeholder management and leadership skills, with the ability to explain complex technical matters clearly and make sound decisions under pressure. A structured, collaborative and commercially aware approach is essential, as is a commitment to health and safety, environmental responsibility and high-quality project outcomes.
