Project Director (Railway Systems)

We are seeking an experienced Project Director (Railway Systems) to lead the successful delivery of complex railway systems programmes from initial concept through to completion and handover. This is a senior leadership role requiring strong technical understanding, commercial awareness and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams across a demanding rail environment.

You will provide overall direction and governance for railway systems projects, ensuring that scope, programme, budget, quality, safety and performance objectives are achieved. Key responsibilities will include developing delivery strategies, managing design and systems integration, coordinating interfaces between infrastructure, rolling stock, signalling, telecommunications, power and control systems, and overseeing testing, commissioning and operational readiness. You will establish effective project controls, monitor progress and risks, lead reviews, and implement corrective action where required. The role will also involve managing contractors, consultants, suppliers and stakeholders, negotiating solutions to complex issues, and ensuring compliance with applicable railway standards, legislation and assurance requirements.

Applicants should have substantial experience directing major railway systems or similarly complex transport projects, ideally within a contractor, engineering consultancy, operator or client-side environment. A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, project management or a related discipline is expected, together with a recognised project management qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience. You will need a strong record of delivering multidisciplinary projects, excellent knowledge of systems engineering, configuration management, integration, verification and validation, and a clear understanding of health, safety, quality and environmental requirements. Strong commercial and financial management skills are essential, as are excellent communication, negotiation and leadership abilities. The successful candidate will be collaborative, decisive and capable of building high-performing teams while maintaining focus on safe, reliable and sustainable project outcomes.
