Safety Chief – RAMS and Systems Assurance

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced safety professional to lead Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) activities across complex engineering and operational programmes. This senior role will provide independent assurance that systems, assets and processes meet applicable safety, quality and regulatory requirements throughout the full lifecycle.

You will establish and maintain the safety assurance framework, set expectations for risk management, and provide expert guidance to project teams, suppliers and senior stakeholders. The role requires a confident communicator who can influence decisions, challenge assumptions constructively and promote a strong, proactive safety culture.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of RAMS and systems assurance strategies, plans and governance arrangements.
  • Manage hazard identification, risk assessment, hazard logs, safety cases and supporting assurance evidence.
  • Review system requirements, designs, analyses, verification activities and validation results to confirm safety integrity.
  • Provide technical leadership across functional safety, system safety, human factors, reliability engineering and configuration management.
  • Coordinate safety assessments, audits, independent reviews and assurance activities, ensuring actions are tracked through to closure.
  • Assess supplier deliverables and oversee the resolution of safety issues, non-conformances and emerging risks.
  • Prepare clear reports and recommendations for senior management and relevant assurance or regulatory bodies.
  • Develop team capability through coaching, knowledge sharing and the continuous improvement of safety processes.

About you

You will have significant experience in RAMS, systems safety or safety assurance within a complex, highly regulated engineering, transport, infrastructure, defence or similar environment. A recognised qualification in engineering, safety or a related discipline is required, together with substantial experience applying structured safety methodologies across the system lifecycle.

You should be familiar with relevant industry standards, risk management techniques and assurance principles, and be able to interpret complex technical information while maintaining a clear focus on operational outcomes. Strong analytical, organisational and stakeholder management skills are essential. Professional registration or membership of a relevant safety or engineering institution would be advantageous.

This role offers the opportunity to make a visible contribution to safe, reliable and sustainable system delivery while working with skilled professionals on technically challenging programmes.
