Major Projects Director - Rail

We are seeking an experienced Major Projects Director to lead the successful delivery of complex rail infrastructure programmes from early development through to completion and handover. This senior leadership role will oversee a portfolio of major projects, ensuring they are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality and performance standards. You will provide clear strategic direction across the project lifecycle, establish effective governance, and ensure that programme objectives remain aligned with operational, commercial and stakeholder requirements.

Key responsibilities will include developing and implementing delivery strategies; leading multidisciplinary teams, consultants, contractors and delivery partners; and maintaining strong control of scope, cost, schedule, risk, quality and change. You will oversee procurement and contract management, resolve complex commercial and technical issues, and ensure compliance with relevant rail, construction, health and safety, environmental and regulatory standards. The role will also involve managing interfaces across infrastructure, systems, operations and other major programmes, while building productive relationships with senior stakeholders, regulators, local authorities and community representatives. You will provide accurate reporting and assurance to executive governance boards and drive a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration and accountability.

Applicants should have substantial experience directing major rail, transport or similarly complex infrastructure programmes, with a proven record of delivering large-scale projects in a highly regulated environment. You will bring strong commercial, financial and risk management capability, together with excellent knowledge of project governance, contracting strategies, design development, construction and commissioning. The successful candidate will be an inspiring and pragmatic leader who can make sound decisions under pressure, communicate confidently at all levels and influence diverse stakeholders. Relevant professional qualifications in engineering, construction, project management or a related discipline are desirable, as is membership of an appropriate professional body.
