Rail Project Director

We are seeking an experienced Rail Project Director to lead the successful delivery of major rail infrastructure projects from concept and mobilisation through to completion and handover. This is a senior leadership position requiring strong commercial, technical and operational expertise, together with the ability to manage complex programmes involving multiple stakeholders, contractors and delivery partners.

You will establish project objectives, governance arrangements, delivery strategies, budgets and detailed programmes, ensuring that all activities are completed safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards. Responsibilities will include directing project teams, managing design and construction interfaces, overseeing procurement and contract performance, monitoring risks and opportunities, and implementing effective change control. You will provide clear reporting on progress, cost, performance and forecast outcomes, while ensuring compliance with relevant rail standards, legislation, assurance processes and environmental requirements.

The successful candidate will build effective relationships with clients, infrastructure managers, regulatory bodies, local authorities, suppliers and internal stakeholders. You will lead commercial and technical discussions, resolve issues decisively, and promote a collaborative, accountable and safety-focused culture across the project. A degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, rail engineering, construction management or a related discipline is expected, along with substantial experience directing major rail or transport infrastructure projects. You should have a strong understanding of rail systems, construction delivery, project controls, risk management and commercial administration, with experience managing large multidisciplinary teams and complex stakeholder environments. Excellent communication, negotiation and decision-making skills are essential, as is a demonstrable record of delivering successful projects in highly regulated settings.
