Technical Head - Rail Control System

We are seeking an experienced Technical Head – Rail Control System to lead the technical direction, delivery, and continuous improvement of rail control and signalling systems. The role will be responsible for ensuring that systems are safe, reliable, compliant, and aligned with operational and business requirements across the full project and asset lifecycle. You will provide technical leadership from concept and design through integration, testing, commissioning, handover, and maintenance.

Key responsibilities include defining system architecture and technical strategies; reviewing designs, specifications, and engineering deliverables; and ensuring compliance with applicable railway standards, safety requirements, and regulatory obligations. You will coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and manage interfaces between signalling, train control, telecommunications, power, rolling stock, infrastructure, and operations. The role will also involve overseeing system integration, verification and validation, safety assurance, configuration management, technical risk assessments, and the resolution of complex technical issues. You will work closely with project, operations, maintenance, suppliers, contractors, and regulatory stakeholders, providing clear technical guidance and timely decisions.

The successful candidate will have a degree in railway engineering, electrical engineering, control systems, systems engineering, or a related discipline, together with substantial experience in rail signalling, train control, or railway automation systems. Strong knowledge of control system architectures, interlocking, automatic train protection or operation, communications-based train control, and systems engineering processes is highly desirable. Experience leading technical teams and major rail projects, combined with a sound understanding of safety-critical development, testing, commissioning, and assurance, is essential. You should be an effective communicator and decision-maker with strong analytical, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills. The ability to manage competing priorities, influence senior stakeholders, and maintain a rigorous focus on safety, quality, and delivery will be critical to success.
