Roads & Highways Engineer

We are seeking a skilled Roads & Highways Engineer to support the planning, design, assessment and delivery of highway infrastructure projects. This role will involve working across a range of schemes, from local road improvements and junction upgrades to major highways, transport corridors and infrastructure renewal programmes. You will contribute to the development of practical, safe and sustainable solutions that meet technical standards, project objectives and stakeholder requirements.

Your responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing highway designs, drawings, specifications, calculations and technical reports; undertaking route assessments, feasibility studies and options appraisals; and supporting the development of traffic management, drainage, pavement and road safety solutions. You will coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, consultants, utility providers and relevant authorities to ensure effective project delivery. The role may also involve site visits, inspections, construction support, progress monitoring and responding to technical queries. You will be expected to identify risks, contribute to programme and cost management, and maintain clear, accurate project records.

Applicants should have a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, highway engineering or a related discipline, together with relevant experience in roads, highways or transport infrastructure. Familiarity with applicable design standards, highway legislation, health and safety requirements and quality assurance procedures is essential. Experience using design and analysis software, CAD packages and common project management tools would be advantageous. You should be able to communicate technical information clearly, produce high-quality documentation and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. A proactive approach, sound engineering judgement and a commitment to delivering safe, sustainable and constructible solutions are important. Professional registration or progress towards chartered status is desirable, as is experience working on projects through design, procurement and construction stages.
