Fisheries Biologist (On-Call)
Fisheries Biologist (On-Call) provides biological expertise to support the assessment, conservation, and management of fish and aquatic resources. The role involves planning and conducting field investigations in rivers, lakes, wetlands, and coastal environments, often under varying weather and site conditions. Duties may include fish sampling, species identification, population surveys, habitat assessments, electrofishing, trap-netting, seining, environmental monitoring, and the collection of biological and water-quality data. The successful candidate will follow approved safety, animal-care, and sampling procedures while ensuring that field data are accurate, complete, and properly documented.
Responsibilities may also include entering, managing, and analysing field data; preparing technical summaries, maps, tables, and reports; reviewing scientific literature; and contributing to recommendations related to fisheries management, habitat protection, restoration, and regulatory compliance. The position may support environmental assessments, monitoring programs, stakeholder consultations, and collaborative projects with Indigenous communities, researchers, landowners, and other public agencies. As an on-call employee, availability may be required for short-notice assignments, seasonal surveys, extended field days, travel, and occasional evenings or weekends. Work may involve carrying equipment, walking long distances over uneven terrain, working from boats, and operating or assisting with vehicles and field instruments.
Applicants should have a degree or diploma in fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, wildlife management, or a related discipline, along with relevant professional or field experience. Knowledge of fish biology, aquatic ecosystems, fisheries sampling methods, data-management practices, and applicable environmental legislation is preferred. Experience with geographic information systems, statistical or database software, and technical report writing will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgement, careful attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team. A valid driver’s licence, willingness to travel, and the ability to meet physical field-work requirements are required.
