Wildlife Biologist On-Call Los Angeles & Central Valley
We are seeking an on-call Wildlife Biologist to support environmental compliance, wildlife surveys, and biological resource management across the Los Angeles region and Central Valley. This role will involve fieldwork at a variety of project sites, including construction areas, transportation corridors, conservation lands, and other developed or undeveloped locations. The successful candidate will help identify sensitive biological resources, assess potential impacts, and provide practical recommendations to support regulatory compliance and responsible project delivery.
Key responsibilities may include conducting surveys for birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, plants, and other wildlife; monitoring construction activities for compliance with approved biological measures; implementing and documenting avoidance and minimisation procedures; performing pre-activity surveys and nest checks; recording observations using GPS and digital data-collection tools; preparing field notes, daily reports, technical memoranda, and permit-related documentation; and communicating findings clearly to project managers, contractors, agency representatives, and other stakeholders. The position may also support habitat assessments, species identification, wildlife handling or relocation under appropriate authorisation, environmental awareness briefings, and occasional evening, early morning, weekend, or overnight work.
Applicants should have a degree in biology, ecology, wildlife management, environmental science, or a related discipline, together with relevant professional or field experience. Knowledge of Southern and Central California ecosystems, protected species, nesting birds, wetland and riparian habitats, and applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations is highly desirable. Strong field identification, technical writing, organisation, and communication skills are essential. Candidates must be comfortable working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in variable weather and terrain, sometimes for extended periods. A valid driver’s licence, reliable transportation, the ability to travel throughout assigned areas, and flexibility to accept short-notice assignments are required. Experience with GIS, GPS equipment, biological monitoring protocols, and environmental compliance documentation will be advantageous.
