Fisheries Technician 1- Feather River Monitoring

We are seeking a Fisheries Technician 1 to support field-based monitoring activities on the Feather River. This entry-level position is suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, collecting accurate scientific data, and contributing to the conservation and management of aquatic resources. The successful candidate will work as part of a field team conducting routine surveys in rivers, streams, hatchery areas, and other monitoring locations under a range of weather and environmental conditions.

Duties will include assisting with fish sampling and identification; operating, cleaning, and maintaining field equipment; recording biological, environmental, and habitat data; and following established protocols for data collection, specimen handling, and quality control. The technician may help with electrofishing, seine or fyke net operations, trapping, tagging, measuring, and releasing fish, as well as monitoring water temperature, flow, dissolved oxygen, and other site conditions. Additional responsibilities may include entering and reviewing data, maintaining field notes and daily logs, preparing equipment and supplies, supporting vehicle and boat checks, and assisting with basic laboratory or office tasks. All work must be completed with careful attention to safety, animal welfare, regulatory requirements, and environmental protection.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent and an interest in fisheries, aquatic ecology, natural resources, or a related field. Coursework, volunteer experience, or previous work involving fish, wildlife, environmental monitoring, or outdoor fieldwork is desirable. The role requires the ability to work independently and cooperatively, follow detailed instructions, recognize and record information accurately, and communicate effectively with colleagues. Candidates must be able to walk, stand, bend, lift and carry field equipment, work in and around moving water, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods. A valid driver’s license, willingness to work variable schedules including early mornings or occasional weekends, and the ability to travel to monitoring sites are required. Training will be provided on applicable sampling methods, equipment, safety procedures, and data systems.
