On-Call Archaeologist

We are seeking an On-Call Archaeologist to provide responsive archaeological support across a varied programme of construction, infrastructure and land-development projects. The role will involve attending sites at short notice to assess discoveries, advise on appropriate action and ensure that work proceeds in accordance with approved archaeological strategies, planning conditions and applicable heritage legislation. You will work closely with site managers, contractors, consultants, curators and other stakeholders, providing clear, practical advice in sometimes challenging and time-sensitive circumstances.

Key responsibilities will include monitoring groundworks, identifying and recording archaeological deposits and finds, supervising trial trenching or excavation activities, undertaking site inspections, and recommending mitigation where unexpected remains are encountered. You will prepare concise site notes, photographic and context records, incident reports and other technical documentation, maintaining accurate records in line with professional standards. The role may also involve coordinating specialist advice, arranging follow-up investigations, supporting post-excavation work and contributing to written reports, project archives and compliance submissions. Availability for occasional evenings, weekends or overnight call-outs will be required, together with the flexibility to travel between sites.

Applicants should have a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience in archaeology, along with practical experience of fieldwork, archaeological monitoring or excavation. A sound understanding of archaeological recording methods, health and safety requirements, planning procedures and heritage guidance is essential. You will need strong observational, organisational and written communication skills, as well as the confidence to make balanced decisions and communicate them professionally to both technical and non-technical audiences. A full driving licence and the ability to work independently are desirable.
