Senior Archaeologist

We are seeking an experienced Senior Archaeologist to lead and deliver archaeological projects from initial assessment through to completion. The role will involve managing fieldwork, producing high-quality technical reports, and providing expert advice to clients, project teams, and regulatory stakeholders. You will contribute to the planning and delivery of archaeological investigations, including desk-based assessments, evaluations, excavations, watching briefs, and post-excavation programmes. The successful candidate will help ensure that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with relevant legislation, professional standards, and project requirements.

Key responsibilities will include preparing project designs, method statements, risk assessments, cost estimates, and programmes; supervising field teams and subcontractors; monitoring quality and progress; and maintaining accurate records and documentation. You will interpret archaeological evidence, assess its significance, and contribute to specialist reports, publication material, and heritage statements. The role will also involve liaising with planning authorities, landowners, consultants, contractors, and local communities, as well as supporting business development through tender preparation, client meetings, and the identification of new opportunities. You may also be expected to mentor junior staff, deliver training, and promote best practice across archaeological projects.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology or a related subject, together with substantial commercial or professional archaeological experience. A strong understanding of UK archaeological practice, planning policy, heritage legislation, and relevant guidance is essential. You will need proven experience managing fieldwork and staff, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to prioritise effectively while working to deadlines and budgets. Membership of a relevant professional body, a full driving licence, and a willingness to travel and work flexibly, including occasional overnight stays or varied site conditions, are desirable. The position offers the opportunity to work on diverse projects while contributing specialist expertise to the protection and interpretation of the historic environment.
