On-call Senior Archaeologist
We are seeking an experienced On-call Senior Archaeologist to provide professional archaeological advice and practical support across a varied programme of projects. This role is suited to a confident field archaeologist who can respond effectively to changing requirements, manage competing priorities and maintain high standards of archaeological practice, health and safety, and client service. The successful candidate will contribute to projects ranging from desk-based assessments and evaluations to excavations, monitoring, recording and post-excavation work.
Responsibilities will include planning and supervising archaeological fieldwork; coordinating small teams and subcontractors; producing and reviewing written schemes of investigation, risk assessments, method statements and fieldwork reports; maintaining accurate records, registers, context sheets, photographic documentation and digital data; and ensuring work is delivered in accordance with relevant legislation, planning conditions, professional standards and project specifications. You will liaise professionally with clients, consultants, contractors, local authorities and heritage regulators, provide clear technical advice, identify potential archaeological risks and help resolve issues promptly. The role may also involve preparing cost estimates, contributing to project programming, mentoring junior staff and undertaking occasional post-excavation assessment or archive preparation.
Applicants should hold a relevant degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology and have substantial commercial archaeological experience, including demonstrable experience supervising fieldwork and producing high-quality technical documentation. A sound understanding of archaeological methodologies, planning requirements, stratigraphic principles and current professional guidance is essential. You should be organised, adaptable and able to work independently while supporting colleagues across multiple locations. Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and a practical approach to problem-solving are required. A full driving licence, willingness to travel and flexibility to undertake short-notice or out-of-hours assignments are expected. Membership of a relevant professional body and a valid CSCS or equivalent site card would be advantageous.
