Archaeologist
We are seeking an experienced Archaeologist to contribute to a varied programme of archaeological investigations across development, infrastructure, and heritage projects. The successful candidate will support work from initial desk-based assessment and field evaluation through to excavation, recording, analysis, and reporting. This role will suit someone who combines sound archaeological knowledge with a practical, methodical approach and a commitment to maintaining high professional standards.
Key responsibilities will include undertaking and supervising fieldwork, including surveys, evaluations, excavations, watching briefs, and site recording; identifying, recovering, and appropriately handling archaeological remains and artefacts; producing accurate written, photographic, and drawn records; completing context sheets, registers, and digital records; and contributing to post-excavation assessment, finds processing, data analysis, and technical reporting. You will be expected to work effectively with colleagues, contractors, clients, landowners, and heritage stakeholders, provide clear updates on progress, and help ensure that projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved methodologies, planning conditions, and relevant professional guidance. The role may involve travel, outdoor work in varying weather conditions, and occasional overnight stays.
Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology or a related subject and have relevant professional experience in commercial or research archaeology. Experience of archaeological field techniques, site supervision, stratigraphic excavation, and preparation of project documentation is essential. Familiarity with digital recording systems, mapping or GIS software, and standard office applications would be advantageous. You should have strong written and verbal communication skills, good attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities while working independently or as part of a team. A full driving licence and willingness to travel to project locations may be required. Applications are welcomed from candidates who demonstrate a commitment to inclusive working practices, health and safety, professional development, and the responsible investigation and interpretation of the historic environment.
