Sr Highways Engineer

We are seeking a Sr Highways Engineer to lead the delivery of highway and transportation engineering projects from concept through to construction. This role will involve managing technical outputs, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and providing expert advice across a varied portfolio of infrastructure schemes. You will be responsible for developing robust, cost-effective and sustainable design solutions that meet relevant standards, client requirements and programme objectives.

Key responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing highway design packages, drawings, specifications, technical reports, calculations and cost estimates; overseeing feasibility studies, option assessments and detailed design work; and supporting the management of project budgets, resources, risks and schedules. You will coordinate with clients, contractors, local authorities, utility providers and other stakeholders, attending design reviews, progress meetings and site visits as required. The role will also include mentoring junior engineers, checking technical work, contributing to bids and fee proposals, and ensuring that all activities comply with health and safety, quality and environmental requirements.

Applicants should hold a relevant degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, highways engineering or a related discipline, with substantial experience delivering highway infrastructure projects. Chartered or incorporated engineer status, or active progression towards professional registration, is desirable. You should have strong knowledge of highway design principles, relevant standards, specifications and approval processes, together with experience using appropriate design and modelling software. Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills are essential, as is the ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively both independently and as part of a wider team. A proactive approach, sound commercial awareness and a commitment to delivering high-quality technical solutions are also required.
