Highways Lead

We are seeking an experienced Highways Lead to provide technical leadership across the planning, design, delivery and maintenance of highway and transportation projects. This is an opportunity to take ownership of complex programmes, guide multidisciplinary teams and ensure that projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required standards. You will contribute to the development of highways strategies, provide expert advice to stakeholders and help shape practical, sustainable solutions that support the needs of communities and users.

Your responsibilities will include leading the preparation and review of highway designs, specifications, technical reports, estimates and contract documentation; overseeing project delivery from feasibility through to completion; and monitoring programme, budget, quality and risk. You will coordinate internal teams, consultants, contractors and statutory bodies, resolve technical issues, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, design standards, health and safety requirements and environmental objectives. You will also support procurement, tender evaluations, site inspections, construction supervision and the successful handover of completed schemes. A key part of the role will be developing less experienced colleagues, sharing best practice and promoting consistent technical standards.

Applicants should have substantial experience in highways, civil engineering or transportation, with a strong understanding of highway design, construction and asset management principles. Professional registration or demonstrable progress towards chartered status is desirable, together with experience managing projects, budgets and external suppliers. You will need excellent communication, negotiation and organisational skills, the ability to interpret technical information and legislation, and confidence in making sound decisions in a changing environment. Experience with relevant design software, contract forms and project management tools would be advantageous. A proactive, collaborative approach and commitment to delivering safe, inclusive and sustainable transport infrastructure are essential.
