We are seeking an experienced Civil Engineer Lead to oversee the civil engineering aspects of tram infrastructure projects from concept through to construction and commissioning. The role will provide technical leadership across the design and delivery of tram corridors, stops, depots, maintenance facilities, drainage, utilities, earthworks, structures, and associated public realm works. You will coordinate multidisciplinary teams, support project planning, and ensure that designs are safe, practical, compliant, and suitable for construction and long-term operation.
Key responsibilities include managing civil engineering deliverables, reviewing technical designs and specifications, and ensuring alignment with applicable standards, legislation, and project requirements. You will lead design reviews, constructability assessments, risk workshops, and value-engineering exercises, while monitoring quality, programme, cost, and technical performance. The role will involve close collaboration with track, systems, structures, geotechnical, utilities, transport planning, environmental, and construction specialists. You will also engage with contractors, suppliers, statutory authorities, landowners, and other stakeholders, resolving technical issues and providing clear, timely engineering advice. Where required, you will contribute to tender documentation, procurement activities, site inspections, design changes, and the assessment of contractor submissions.
Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering and have substantial experience delivering major transport or rail infrastructure projects, preferably with direct exposure to tram or light-rail schemes. Professional registration or chartership is desirable, together with strong knowledge of civil design principles, construction methods, temporary works interfaces, drainage, utilities coordination, accessibility, and highway or public-realm integration. Experience leading technical teams and managing interfaces across complex projects is essential. You will be an effective communicator with strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills, able to make sound decisions in a challenging delivery environment. A proactive approach to health and safety, quality assurance, sustainability, and stakeholder management is expected.
