Principal Engineer (Highways & Active Travel)

We are seeking an experienced Principal Engineer (Highways & Active Travel) to provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of transport, highways and sustainable travel projects. You will lead the development and delivery of high-quality schemes from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, construction and completion, ensuring that solutions are safe, inclusive, sustainable, deliverable and aligned with relevant standards and legislation.

The role will involve managing multidisciplinary design teams, coordinating technical inputs and providing expert advice to clients, stakeholders, contractors and colleagues. You will oversee the preparation and review of drawings, specifications, reports, estimates, technical assessments and tender documentation, while ensuring that projects meet agreed timescales, budgets and quality requirements. You will contribute to the development of active travel networks, walking and cycling infrastructure, highway improvement schemes, junction and corridor projects, traffic management measures and public realm enhancements. You will also support business development, fee proposals, project planning, risk management and the mentoring of engineers and other technical staff.

You will be a professionally qualified civil or highways engineer, ideally holding Chartered Engineer status or working towards it, with substantial experience in highways, transport infrastructure and active travel design. A strong understanding of relevant design standards, guidance, safety requirements, construction practices and approval processes is essential, together with experience using design and project management software. You will be confident leading teams, managing competing priorities and communicating complex technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound commercial awareness, strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to delivering sustainable, accessible and user-focused transport solutions. Experience of stakeholder engagement, public consultation, contractor liaison and working within a consultancy, local government or similar professional environment would be advantageous.
