Railway Track Technician

We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Railway Track Technician to support the inspection, maintenance, repair and renewal of railway infrastructure. Working as part of a dedicated track team, you will help ensure that rail routes remain safe, reliable and compliant with operational standards. The role involves working outdoors in varied weather conditions, often at night or during planned engineering possessions, and may require travel to different work locations.

Your duties will include inspecting rails, sleepers, ballast, points, crossings and associated track components; identifying defects and reporting potential hazards; carrying out routine maintenance and corrective repairs; and assisting with track renewals, alignment, tamping, levelling and drainage activities. You will use a range of hand tools, powered equipment and specialist measuring instruments, while following work instructions, site protection arrangements and safe systems of work. Accurate completion of inspection records, maintenance documentation and safety reports will also be required. You may assist with the operation of on-track plant and other machinery, subject to appropriate training and certification.

Applicants should have practical experience in railway track maintenance, construction, civil engineering, or a similar hands-on environment. A strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements, manual handling practices and risk controls is essential. The ability to read technical information, follow procedures accurately and work effectively as part of a team is required, along with good communication and problem-solving skills. You must be physically fit, comfortable working at height or in confined areas where necessary, and able to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays. Relevant track safety qualifications, plant competencies, a driving licence and experience working within a rail possession environment would be advantageous. Full training and ongoing development may be provided to support the successful candidate.
