We are seeking an experienced Senior Archaeologist to lead and deliver archaeological investigations across a varied programme of development and heritage projects. You will provide expert advice from initial assessment and desk-based research through to fieldwork, analysis, reporting and publication. The role involves planning and supervising evaluations, excavations, watching briefs and surveys, ensuring that work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant legislation, professional standards, planning conditions and project methodologies.

You will manage archaeological teams and subcontractors, coordinate resources and schedules, and act as a key point of contact for clients, consultants, curators, contractors, landowners and regulatory authorities. Responsibilities will include preparing project designs, written schemes of investigation, risk assessments, cost estimates and progress updates; monitoring quality and compliance; reviewing field records and stratigraphic data; and contributing to post-excavation assessment, analysis, archiving and dissemination. You may also support business development by contributing to tenders, fee proposals, technical briefings and stakeholder presentations, while mentoring less experienced colleagues and promoting high standards of professional practice.

The successful candidate will have substantial commercial or professional archaeological experience, including responsibility for complex fieldwork projects and the supervision of staff. A relevant degree or equivalent qualification, appropriate professional membership or demonstrable commitment to professional development, and a strong understanding of archaeological legislation, guidance and planning processes are required. You should be confident interpreting evidence, producing clear technical reports and managing competing priorities to meet deadlines and budgets. Excellent written and verbal communication, sound judgement, attention to detail and a collaborative approach are essential. A current driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites, including occasional overnight stays, may be required. Experience with digital recording systems, GIS, archaeological databases and post-excavation programmes would be advantageous.
