Job Title - Switchgear Installation & Testing Engineer

Contract Length - 6/12 months

Location - UK Nationwide

My client is seeking experienced engineers to join our team, specializing in the installation, commissioning, and testing of AIS (Air-Insulated Switchgear) and GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear) equipment. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of power systems by delivering high-quality grid infrastructure solutions. Strong expertise in disconnectors and practical experience with power transformers will be highly valued.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the installation, commissioning, and testing of AIS and GIS switchgear in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and safety regulations
  • Conduct thorough inspections, maintenance, and functional testing of disconnectors, ensuring optimal performance and reliability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to switchgear and power transformers during installation and operation
  • Support integration and testing of power transformers, including routine checks and diagnostics to verify performance within the grid system
  • Prepare detailed documentation, test reports, and commissioning records, ensuring compliance with quality assurance protocols
  • Work closely with project management and site teams to coordinate schedules, resources, and logistics for switchgear installation activities
  • Participate in risk assessments and implement mitigation measures to maintain a safe working environment on-site
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and technicians during installation and testing phases

Preferred Experience:

  • Proven hands-on experience with the installation, commissioning, and testing of AIS and GIS switchgear across various projects
  • In-depth technical knowledge of disconnectors, including operational principles, maintenance requirements, and troubleshooting techniques
  • Practical experience with power transformers, including installation, testing, and performance evaluation
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations (IEC, ANSI, IEEE) related to switchgear and transformer equipment
  • Strong understanding of electrical protection and control systems associated with switchgear
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment within the energy or utility sector
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical challenges
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise technical reports

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and configure SCADA systems for onshore and offshore substations, aligned with project and operational requirements.
  • Interface with internal engineering teams and external stakeholders to ensure robust system integration.
  • Implement and manage communication protocols such as IEC 61850 (including GOOSE and MMS), Modbus, DNP3, and OPC.
  • Perform SCADA system testing, validation, and troubleshooting of both hardware and software components.
  • Support commissioning activities at project sites, including SCADA configuration and functional testing.
  • Collaborate with Protection & Control and Grid Automation teams to ensure seamless interoperability of systems.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, system reports, and user training materials.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, specifications, and safety regulations throughout all phases of the project.

Key Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in SCADA engineering, particularly in substation automation, power transmission, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Solid understanding of SCADA architectures, RTUs, HMIs, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Proficiency with IEC 61850-based system configuration and integration.
  • Experience with industry-standard SCADA platforms (e.g., Grid Automation tools, Siemens WinCC, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of substation protection and control systems.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills in technical environments.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a multidisciplinary, international team.
  • Willingness to travel within Europe for site-related activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in offshore wind or high-voltage substation projects.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity measures for industrial control systems.
  • Background in electrical engineering and grid integration concepts.
