Rail - Civils/Structural Lead
An exciting opportunity is available for a Rail Civils/Structural Lead to provide technical leadership across a range of rail infrastructure projects. The role will involve managing the delivery of civil and structural engineering solutions from feasibility and design through to construction and handover, ensuring that work is safe, compliant, buildable and aligned with client requirements. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, clients and stakeholders to coordinate interfaces and deliver high-quality outcomes within agreed timescales and budgets.
Key responsibilities will include leading the development and review of civil and structural designs for rail assets, including structures, earthworks, drainage, platforms, retaining systems and associated infrastructure. You will provide technical assurance, oversee design risk management, contribute to design reviews and approvals, and ensure compliance with relevant standards, specifications and regulatory requirements. The role will also involve supporting project planning, cost and resource management, procurement activities, construction support and the resolution of technical issues encountered on site. You will be expected to promote best practice, mentor engineers and technicians, and contribute to continuous improvement across engineering delivery.
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent qualification in civil or structural engineering, together with significant experience delivering rail infrastructure or similarly complex transport projects. Professional registration, or a clear commitment to achieving it, is desirable. You will need strong knowledge of relevant rail standards, design codes, construction methods and health and safety requirements, as well as experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing technical interfaces. Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills are essential, alongside the ability to build effective relationships with clients and delivery partners. A proactive approach, commercial awareness and a commitment to quality are also required. The role may involve travel to project and site locations, with occasional out-of-hours or weekend work to support operational railway activities.
