Track & 3rd rail Lead Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Track & 3rd Rail Lead Engineer to provide technical leadership across rail infrastructure projects from concept and design through to construction, testing and commissioning. The role will be responsible for ensuring that track and third-rail systems are safe, compliant, technically robust and delivered in accordance with programme, cost and quality requirements. You will lead engineering activities, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and act as a senior point of contact for project managers, designers, contractors, operators and other stakeholders.
Key responsibilities will include developing and reviewing track and third-rail designs, specifications, engineering reports and technical submissions; managing design interfaces and identifying technical risks; supporting construction planning and installation activities; and overseeing inspection, testing, commissioning and handback. You will provide technical guidance on permanent way, rail systems, conductor rail arrangements, clearances, access, isolation requirements and integration with signalling, power, civils and station infrastructure. The role will also involve reviewing supplier and contractor proposals, supporting safety assessments, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and legislation, and contributing to technical assurance, audits, investigations and lessons-learned processes.
Applicants should hold a relevant degree or equivalent qualification in railway engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering or a related discipline, together with substantial experience delivering track and/or third-rail systems in a complex rail environment. A strong understanding of railway standards, engineering assurance, construction methodologies, testing and commissioning is essential. Professional registration, such as Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, would be advantageous. You will need excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence others, manage competing priorities and make sound technical decisions. Experience working in operational or safety-critical railway environments, along with familiarity with project controls, risk management and collaborative digital engineering tools, would be highly valued. The role may require site travel, work outside normal hours and participation in planned possessions or access arrangements.
