Senior Traveling Superintendent - Detention / Justice
We are seeking an experienced Senior Traveling Superintendent to lead the construction and delivery of complex detention, correctional, courthouse, and other justice-sector facilities across multiple locations. This is a field-based role requiring extensive travel and strong leadership throughout all phases of construction, from preconstruction planning and site mobilisation through commissioning, closeout, and handover. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining high standards of safety, quality, schedule, and cost while coordinating work in secure, highly regulated environments.
Key responsibilities include directing day-to-day site operations; supervising project superintendents, foremen, subcontractors, and site personnel; reviewing drawings, specifications, schedules, and submittals; coordinating construction activities with owners, consultants, authorities, and specialist vendors; and ensuring work complies with contract requirements, building codes, security standards, and applicable regulations. You will monitor progress, identify risks, resolve field issues, manage inspections, maintain accurate project documentation, and support planning for logistics, phasing, security, access control, and live-site conditions. The role also requires proactive communication with project leadership, participation in meetings, preparation of reports, and a consistent focus on delivering safe, durable, and operationally effective facilities.
Candidates should have substantial commercial construction experience, including significant responsibility on justice, institutional, healthcare, government, or similarly complex projects. Experience with detention or correctional facilities is strongly preferred, as is a thorough understanding of secure construction environments, specialised building systems, and phased or occupied-site work. A degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related discipline is advantageous, although equivalent experience will be considered. Strong knowledge of scheduling, quality control, safety procedures, and construction documentation is essential. The ideal candidate is an organised and decisive leader who can work independently, travel regularly, build effective teams, and manage competing priorities under demanding conditions. Proficiency with common construction management and scheduling software, along with relevant safety training or certifications, is desirable.
