Rolling Stock Technician

We are seeking a skilled Rolling Stock Technician to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of passenger and/or freight rail vehicles. Working as part of a multidisciplinary maintenance team, you will inspect, maintain, test and repair rolling stock in accordance with engineering standards, maintenance schedules and safety procedures. This role may involve working across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and control systems, ensuring vehicles are fit for service and returned to operation within required timescales.

Your duties will include carrying out planned and corrective maintenance, fault diagnosis and component replacement; completing inspections, examinations and functional tests; and accurately recording work undertaken using maintenance management systems and technical documentation. You will investigate defects, identify root causes and escalate significant issues where appropriate. The role also involves interpreting engineering drawings, wiring diagrams and maintenance instructions, using diagnostic equipment and hand tools, and maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment. You may be required to support vehicle movements, shift handovers, technical investigations and continuous improvement activities.

Applicants should have relevant experience in rail vehicle maintenance, heavy engineering, automotive, aerospace or a comparable technical environment, together with a recognised qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical, electrical or mechatronic engineering. Knowledge of rolling stock systems, railway safety requirements and maintenance standards would be advantageous. You will need strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team. A flexible approach is essential, as the position may involve shift work, nights, weekends and public holidays. You must be committed to safe working practices, hold clear and accurate technical records, and be willing to undertake further training and competency assessments as required.
