Rolling Stock Engineer
We are seeking a Rolling Stock Engineer to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation, maintenance and development of rail vehicles. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you will provide technical expertise across the rolling stock lifecycle, from asset performance and maintenance strategy through to modification, renewal and introduction of new vehicles. You will assess engineering issues, identify practical solutions and ensure that all work complies with relevant legislation, railway standards, safety requirements and quality procedures.
Your responsibilities will include investigating faults and recurring failures, analysing vehicle performance data, and producing clear technical reports, specifications and recommendations. You will contribute to maintenance optimisation, reliability improvement and root-cause analysis activities, working closely with maintenance teams, operators, suppliers and other engineering disciplines. You may also support engineering change, fleet modifications, acceptance and validation activities, including the review of drawings, risk assessments, test results and technical documentation. Effective management of technical queries and the ability to communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders will be essential.
Applicants should have a degree, higher qualification or equivalent professional experience in mechanical, electrical, rail or a related engineering discipline. Experience working with rolling stock, rail systems, heavy engineering or safety-critical assets is highly desirable, together with knowledge of vehicle systems, maintenance principles, reliability engineering and relevant railway standards. You should be analytical, organised and confident in making evidence-based decisions. The role requires strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities while working collaboratively. A proactive approach to safety, continuous improvement and professional development is essential. Membership of an appropriate engineering institution, or progress towards professional registration, would be advantageous.
