We are seeking an experienced Rolling Stock Fleet Manager to oversee the safe, reliable and efficient operation of a diverse rail vehicle fleet. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining fleet availability, performance and compliance throughout the rolling stock lifecycle, while supporting operational objectives and delivering continuous improvements in safety, quality and cost effectiveness.
Key responsibilities will include developing and implementing fleet management strategies, monitoring vehicle performance and availability, and coordinating planned and corrective maintenance activities with engineering, operations, suppliers and maintenance partners. You will manage fleet reliability data, investigate recurring defects and service failures, and ensure that appropriate corrective and preventative actions are implemented. The role will also involve overseeing maintenance programmes, reviewing technical documentation, supporting modifications and refurbishment projects, and ensuring that vehicles remain compliant with relevant legislation, technical standards and safety requirements.
You will provide clear technical and performance reporting, manage fleet-related risks and budgets, and contribute to procurement, contract management and supplier performance reviews. The position requires effective leadership across multidisciplinary teams, with responsibility for setting priorities, resolving operational issues and promoting a strong culture of safety and continuous improvement. You may also support incident investigations, audits, asset planning and the introduction of new rolling stock or technology.
Applicants should have substantial experience in rolling stock, rail engineering, fleet management or a closely related transport environment, together with a strong understanding of railway safety, maintenance regimes, asset management and reliability improvement. Experience managing technical teams, contractors and external stakeholders is essential, as is the ability to interpret performance data and make sound, evidence-based decisions. Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills are required, along with a proactive approach and the ability to manage competing priorities in a safety-critical environment. Relevant engineering or transport qualifications, professional registration, and knowledge of applicable rail standards would be advantageous.
