Director – Systems and Rolling Stock

We are seeking an experienced Director – Systems and Rolling Stock to provide strategic and technical leadership across the development, integration, delivery and lifecycle management of complex rail systems and rolling stock assets. The role will oversee the alignment of rolling stock, infrastructure, signalling, communications, power, passenger information and other operational systems, ensuring that requirements are clearly defined, interfaces are effectively managed and solutions meet safety, performance, reliability and customer needs.

Responsibilities will include setting the technical direction for systems and rolling stock programmes; leading multidisciplinary engineering and asset management teams; managing design reviews, verification and validation activities; and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards, assurance processes and contractual obligations. You will provide senior input into procurement, supplier selection, manufacturing, testing, commissioning and acceptance, while monitoring delivery against approved scope, budget, programme and quality requirements. The role will also involve identifying and managing technical, operational and integration risks, resolving complex interface issues, and establishing effective governance, reporting and change-control arrangements. You will build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, delivery partners, manufacturers, maintainers, regulators and other industry representatives.

The successful candidate will bring substantial senior-level experience in rail systems, rolling stock engineering, railway operations or a closely related transport environment, supported by a degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, transport, systems management or another relevant discipline. Professional registration or membership of an appropriate engineering or transport body is desirable. You will have a strong understanding of systems engineering, safety assurance, RAMS, configuration management, whole-life asset management and operational readiness. Excellent leadership, communication, commercial awareness and stakeholder-management skills are essential, together with the ability to translate complex technical matters into clear recommendations for senior decision-makers. A structured, collaborative and delivery-focused approach will be vital to success.
