We are seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Planner to lead and deliver high-quality environmental planning advice across a varied portfolio of development, infrastructure and regeneration projects. This is an opportunity to influence sustainable outcomes, guide project teams and support clients through complex planning and environmental requirements.
You will manage environmental planning inputs from project inception through to consent and delivery, working closely with planners, technical specialists, consultants, communities and regulatory bodies. The role requires strong professional judgement, excellent communication skills and the ability to balance environmental protection with practical development objectives.
Key responsibilities
- Lead environmental planning assessments, strategies and supporting documentation for planning applications and consenting processes.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage external technical advisers to ensure accurate, timely and proportionate project outputs.
- Provide advice on environmental impact assessment, sustainability, biodiversity, climate resilience, landscape, heritage and related planning matters.
- Review technical reports and translate complex information into clear recommendations for clients, decision-makers and stakeholders.
- Engage with local authorities, statutory consultees, community representatives and other interested parties.
- Monitor changes in environmental legislation, planning policy and industry best practice, advising colleagues on their implications.
- Support business development through proposals, fee estimates, client presentations and the development of long-term professional relationships.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to a positive, collaborative and inclusive working environment.
About you
You will have substantial experience in environmental planning, environmental impact assessment or a closely related discipline, gained within consultancy, local government, development or infrastructure. A relevant degree or professional qualification is expected, alongside a strong understanding of the UK planning system and environmental legislation.
You should be confident managing competing priorities, budgets and deadlines, with a proven ability to work independently while contributing effectively to multidisciplinary teams. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is a practical, solutions-focused approach to environmental challenges. Membership of a relevant professional body, such as the RTPI, IEMA or a related institution, would be advantageous.
