Principal Biologist - Environmental Scientist
We are seeking an experienced Principal Biologist – Environmental Scientist to provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of environmental assessment, ecological investigation and natural resource management projects. This role will involve applying sound scientific judgement to complex environmental challenges, supporting project delivery from initial planning through to reporting, and providing practical advice to clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary project teams.
Key responsibilities will include designing and managing ecological and environmental studies; leading field investigations, surveys and data collection programs; interpreting scientific information and preparing high-quality technical reports; assessing potential impacts on biodiversity, habitats, threatened species and sensitive environmental values; and developing effective mitigation, monitoring and management strategies. You will contribute to environmental approvals, impact assessments and regulatory submissions, while ensuring work is delivered to relevant legislation, standards, guidelines and quality requirements. The role will also involve mentoring junior staff, reviewing technical outputs, managing budgets and schedules, contributing to business development, and representing the team at meetings, workshops and stakeholder consultations.
To be successful, you will hold a relevant tertiary qualification in biology, environmental science, ecology or a related discipline, together with substantial professional experience in environmental consulting, applied research or environmental assessment. Strong knowledge of ecological principles, environmental legislation, survey methodologies and impact assessment processes is essential. Experience leading projects, supervising field teams and communicating technical findings to both specialist and non-specialist audiences will be highly regarded. You will demonstrate excellent analytical, report-writing and organisational skills, sound commercial awareness, and the ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of complex tasks. A current driver’s licence and willingness to undertake regional or remote fieldwork may be required.
