Traveling Project Manager - Heavy Civil/DOT
We are seeking an experienced Traveling Project Manager to lead heavy civil and Department of Transportation (DOT) construction projects across multiple locations. This role is responsible for overseeing projects from preconstruction through completion, ensuring work is delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements. Extensive travel to active project sites is required, with assignments potentially spanning multiple states and varying project durations.
Key responsibilities include managing project schedules, budgets, cost controls, change orders, subcontracts, procurement, and document control. You will coordinate closely with owners, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, and field leadership to resolve issues and maintain project progress. The Project Manager will review plans and specifications, track production and financial performance, prepare estimates and forecasts, support bidding and preconstruction activities, and ensure accurate project reporting. Additional duties include leading progress meetings, managing claims and risk, monitoring quality requirements, and maintaining compliance with applicable DOT standards, permits, safety regulations, and contractual obligations.
Candidates should have substantial project management experience in heavy civil construction, preferably involving highways, bridges, roads, utilities, earthwork, asphalt, concrete, or other transportation infrastructure. A bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related discipline is preferred, along with strong knowledge of construction means and methods, project controls, scheduling software, and cost management systems. Experience working with DOT contracts, public-sector clients, and self-perform crews is highly valued. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and decisive problem solver who can manage competing priorities, build strong working relationships, and lead teams in a fast-paced field environment. A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively are required.
