Project Manager – Heavy Civil
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the successful delivery of major heavy civil engineering projects. This is an opportunity to take ownership of complex schemes from planning and mobilisation through to completion, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and within budget.
You will oversee all aspects of project performance, coordinating internal teams, subcontractors, consultants, suppliers and client representatives. The role requires a proactive leader who can build strong working relationships, manage competing priorities and maintain a clear focus on quality, commercial performance and customer satisfaction.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the full project lifecycle, including planning, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
- Develop and maintain programmes, budgets, risk registers and project documentation.
- Lead site teams and coordinate labour, plant, materials and specialist subcontractors.
- Monitor progress against key milestones and implement corrective action where required.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
- Manage change control, valuations, variations, cost reporting and commercial risk.
- Maintain effective communication with clients, designers, suppliers and stakeholders.
- Promote a positive safety culture and encourage continuous improvement across the project team.
About you
You will have substantial experience managing heavy civil engineering or infrastructure projects, ideally involving earthworks, structures, highways, utilities, drainage or similar large-scale construction activities. A recognised qualification in civil engineering, construction management or a related discipline is desirable, together with relevant professional or industry accreditation.
Strong commercial awareness, sound knowledge of construction methods and excellent understanding of health and safety legislation are essential. You should be confident interpreting technical information, managing contractual obligations and making informed decisions under pressure. Excellent communication, leadership, organisation and problem-solving skills are also required.
This role offers the chance to make a visible contribution to significant infrastructure projects while working within a collaborative and professional environment. Applicants must be prepared to work on active construction sites and travel as required by project demands.
