Deputy Rail Systems Director

We are seeking an accomplished Deputy Rail Systems Director to support the strategic leadership, governance and delivery of complex rail systems programmes. This is a senior role for a technically credible and collaborative professional who can help shape the development of safe, reliable and integrated railway infrastructure. You will work closely with senior stakeholders, project teams, delivery partners and regulatory bodies to ensure that systems engineering, technology and operational requirements are effectively translated into deliverable outcomes.

Key responsibilities will include supporting the Rail Systems Director in setting technical and delivery strategy; overseeing systems integration, assurance, engineering governance and interface management across multidisciplinary programmes; and providing direction on requirements, architecture, verification and validation. You will monitor programme performance, identify and manage technical and delivery risks, and ensure that decisions are supported by robust analysis. The role will also involve contributing to investment planning, procurement and commercial activity, reviewing technical submissions, and promoting consistent standards, processes and lessons learned across the rail portfolio. You will be expected to champion safety, sustainability, accessibility and continuous improvement in all aspects of the work.

Applicants should have substantial experience in rail systems, systems engineering or a closely related transport discipline, gained within major infrastructure, railway operations, engineering consultancy or a comparable environment. A strong understanding of railway systems, integration, assurance, safety management and regulatory requirements is essential, together with experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder programmes. You will be an influential communicator with the confidence to engage at executive, technical and operational levels, resolve competing priorities and build productive relationships. Relevant professional qualifications or chartered status are desirable, as is experience working across signalling, rolling stock, stations, electrification, telecommunications or operational control systems. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgement, commercial awareness and a clear commitment to delivering high-quality, safe and dependable rail solutions.
