The Cultural Resources Monitor I supports field-based cultural resources and archaeological monitoring activities during construction, maintenance, and related ground-disturbing work. Working under the direction of experienced cultural resources professionals, this entry-level role observes excavation and grading activities, identifies potential archaeological or historic materials, and helps ensure work is conducted in accordance with applicable permits, regulations, and approved monitoring plans. The position may require regular travel to active project sites, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and coordination with construction crews, inspectors, archaeologists, tribal representatives, and other stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include conducting monitoring during ground disturbance; documenting daily observations, site conditions, and construction progress; recognizing and reporting artifacts, features, human remains, or other materials that may have cultural significance; assisting with the implementation of discovery and inadvertent-discovery procedures; maintaining accurate field notes, photographs, maps, and monitoring logs; and preparing routine reports and supporting documentation. The successful candidate will communicate clearly with project personnel, promptly escalate concerns, protect sensitive information, and follow established health, safety, environmental, and cultural resource protocols. Additional duties may include assisting with surveys, site inspections, artifact handling, data entry, and preparation of technical materials.

A degree or coursework in archaeology, anthropology, history, cultural resources management, or a closely related field is preferred. Relevant field experience, archaeological monitoring experience, or knowledge of state and federal cultural resources regulations is an advantage. Candidates should demonstrate strong observation, organization, writing, and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The role may involve walking over uneven terrain, standing for extended periods, lifting field equipment, and working near active construction operations. A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel or work flexible schedules may be required. Training and mentoring will be provided to support continued professional development.
