Cultural resources monitor
We are seeking a Cultural Resources Monitor to support construction, land management, and environmental projects where ground-disturbing activities may affect archaeological, historical, or cultural resources. The successful candidate will monitor work areas, access routes, staging areas, and other project locations for cultural materials or features, helping ensure that activities comply with applicable permits, environmental commitments, and cultural resource protection requirements. This role may involve working outdoors for extended periods and travelling to remote or active project sites.
Key responsibilities include observing excavation, grading, trenching, vegetation removal, and related construction activities; identifying and documenting archaeological artifacts, features, human remains, or other materials of potential cultural significance; maintaining accurate daily monitoring logs, photographs, maps, and field notes; and promptly reporting discoveries or potential impacts to the appropriate project personnel and qualified cultural resources specialists. You will help implement inadvertent discovery procedures, support site avoidance and protection measures, participate in surveys or inspections when required, and contribute to clear technical reports and project records. The role also requires effective communication with contractors, inspectors, environmental staff, and cultural representatives while maintaining professional conduct and respect for sensitive information.
Applicants should have relevant education or practical experience in archaeology, anthropology, cultural resource management, heritage studies, or a related discipline. Knowledge of archaeological methods, cultural resource regulations, and field documentation standards is preferred. Experience monitoring construction or civil works is an advantage. You must be able to recognize potentially significant cultural materials, follow written procedures, use GPS or mobile data-collection tools, and produce accurate written documentation. Strong attention to detail, sound judgement, and the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team are essential. The position requires physical stamina, the ability to walk over uneven terrain and work in varying weather conditions, and a willingness to follow site safety requirements, including any applicable training, screening, or personal protective equipment standards.
