Communications Systems Superintendent - LRT

Supporting a Tier One Contractor - Western Canada

EWI are supporting a Tier One contractor delivering a major LRT programme in Western Canada, and we're looking for a Communications Systems Superintendent to oversee all field execution related to communications and low‑voltage systems. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, timely, and high‑quality installation of telecom infrastructure, fiber networks, radio systems, security systems, and associated communications works across an active rail project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead daily field operations for communications and low‑voltage systems, ensuring all work is completed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with project specifications.
  • Coordinate installation activities based on engineering drawings, approved submittals, and project requirements.
  • Develop and manage work schedules in coordination with Site Engineers/Coordinators and guided by the Segment or Package Manager.
  • Coordinate site sequencing and progress with adjacent segments and multidisciplinary teams to maintain programme alignment.
  • Work closely with engineers, inspectors, vendors, subcontractors, and client representatives to resolve technical issues.
  • Support field crews by interpreting drawings, clarifying requirements, and escalating technical queries to engineering teams as needed.
  • Provide field‑level problem solving, identify risks, and escalate issues promptly.
  • Maintain a strong on‑site presence to oversee progress, troubleshoot issues, and support field execution.
  • Complete daily field reports and maintain accurate documentation within project control systems.
  • Champion safety programs-monitoring site conditions, leading toolbox talks, hazard assessments (JHA/FLHA), near‑miss reporting, and participating in incident investigations.
  • Maintain full accountability for safety across all communications system activities.
  • Oversee installation quality, ensuring compliance with drawings, specifications, and standards.
  • Identify, track, and resolve non‑conformances, working with Field Engineers and management as needed.
  • Support environmental compliance by integrating environmental considerations into daily work.
  • Assist in budget planning, cost estimating, and efficiency analysis.
  • Coordinate material procurement, equipment logistics, and preparation for specialized communication system installations.
  • Establish productivity targets and manage crew hours, preventing schedule or cost overruns.
  • Review and approve timesheets, ensuring correlation between hours worked and progress achieved.
  • Lead, mentor, and coach crews, foremen, and subcontractors operating across multiple active work fronts.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, inspectors, and internal stakeholders to support smooth delivery.
  • Provide clear, timely reporting on progress, risks, and project changes to management.
  • Coordinate with field coordination teams to schedule survey, concrete, safety, environmental, and quality inspections.
  • Provide technical and administrative support as required by the wider project team.

Requirements

  • Diploma, degree, or trade certification in engineering, construction, or a related discipline (or equivalent hands‑on experience).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in heavy civil construction; LRT or similar public infrastructure experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with communications systems construction-telecoms, fiber optics, network cabling, radio, or security systems.
  • Exposure to earthworks, concrete, or heavy equipment operations considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence (clean abstract preferred).
  • Ability to work safely on active construction sites, including climbing, uneven ground, and all-weather outdoor conditions.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Proven crew leadership and mentoring capability.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities across a multi-discipline, multi-deadline environment.
  • Proficient with MS Office and SharePoint.
  • Field‑oriented mindset with the flexibility to work between site and office.
  • Self‑directed, motivated, and capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Solid understanding of construction safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills with a proactive approach.
  • High sense of urgency and commitment to achieving project goals.
