Water Resources Section Head

We are seeking an experienced Water Resources Section Head to lead the planning, management, and delivery of water resources programmes and technical services. The role will provide strategic and operational leadership across water supply, hydrology, drainage, flood risk, groundwater, and related infrastructure initiatives. You will guide multidisciplinary teams, set priorities, allocate resources, and ensure that work is delivered to high professional, regulatory, environmental, and safety standards.

Key responsibilities include overseeing water resources assessments, demand and supply studies, watershed and catchment planning, flood risk evaluations, hydraulic modelling, and the development of sustainable water management strategies. You will review technical reports, designs, specifications, and feasibility studies; manage consultants and contractors; monitor budgets, schedules, risks, and quality; and support the preparation of business cases and investment plans. The role will also involve maintaining effective relationships with regulators, public authorities, communities, clients, and other stakeholders, while representing the section in technical meetings and industry forums. You will promote innovation, climate resilience, environmental stewardship, and the efficient use of water resources.

Applicants should hold a degree in water resources engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, hydrology, or a closely related discipline, together with substantial experience in water resources planning, engineering, or management. Professional registration or equivalent accreditation is desirable. Proven experience leading technical teams and complex projects is essential, as is strong knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, modelling tools, risk management practices, and environmental considerations. Excellent communication, report-writing, organisational, and stakeholder management skills are required. The successful candidate will be a confident decision-maker who can balance strategic priorities with operational demands, develop team capability, and deliver practical, sustainable solutions in a changing water sector.
