Water Resources Section Head

We are seeking an experienced Water Resources Section Head to lead the planning, delivery and technical oversight of water resources programmes and projects. This role will provide professional direction across hydrology, hydraulics, flood risk management, drainage, water supply, catchment management and related infrastructure studies. The successful candidate will manage a multidisciplinary team, promote high standards of technical quality, and ensure that work is delivered safely, efficiently, sustainably and in accordance with applicable legislation, standards and contractual requirements.

Key responsibilities will include developing section strategies, work plans and budgets; allocating resources and monitoring performance; reviewing technical reports, models, designs and assessments; and providing authoritative advice to internal and external stakeholders. You will lead or contribute to feasibility studies, environmental and flood risk assessments, water-related master planning, asset planning and infrastructure design. The role will also involve identifying risks and opportunities, supporting business development, preparing proposals and fee estimates, managing consultants and contractors, and maintaining strong relationships with regulators, clients, communities and project partners. You will be expected to mentor staff, support professional development, encourage knowledge sharing and help build a positive, inclusive and collaborative working environment.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in water resources engineering, civil engineering, hydrology, environmental engineering or a related discipline, together with substantial relevant professional experience. Professional registration or chartered status is desirable. You will have strong knowledge of water resources management, hydrological and hydraulic modelling, flood risk principles, drainage systems, data analysis and relevant regulatory frameworks. Experience managing teams, programmes, budgets and complex projects is essential, as is the ability to communicate technical information clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. Strong analytical, organisational, leadership and problem-solving skills are required, along with a commitment to sustainable water management, technical excellence, health and safety, and continuous improvement.
