CEQA Area Lead - San Francisco Bay Area
We are seeking an experienced CEQA Area Lead to support a growing environmental planning and permitting practice across the San Francisco Bay Area. This role will provide technical leadership, project direction, and client support for a diverse portfolio of public- and private-sector projects, including transportation, housing, infrastructure, renewable energy, community development, and natural resource initiatives. The successful candidate will help shape regional strategy, strengthen client relationships, and contribute to the continued growth of a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
Responsibilities will include managing and overseeing CEQA documentation, including exemptions, initial studies, negative declarations, mitigated negative declarations, environmental impact reports, addenda, and related technical studies. You will serve as a senior advisor to clients and project teams, lead project scoping and agency coordination, review technical analyses, manage schedules and budgets, and ensure deliverables meet applicable regulatory, technical, and quality standards. The role will also involve mentoring staff, coordinating with subconsultants, participating in public meetings and hearings, preparing proposals, supporting business development, and identifying opportunities to expand services throughout the region. Familiarity with NEPA, local environmental review procedures, permitting requirements, and environmental justice considerations is highly desirable.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in environmental planning, environmental science, urban planning, natural resources, or a related discipline; a master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience preparing or managing CEQA documents is expected, along with a strong understanding of the California Environmental Quality Act, State CEQA Guidelines, and Bay Area regulatory and planning environments. Experience leading complex projects, supervising teams, communicating with diverse stakeholders, and managing client relationships is essential. Strong writing, editing, presentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills are required. The position offers the opportunity to influence high-profile projects, develop regional partnerships, and help advance practical, legally defensible, and sustainable outcomes.
