This role will involve working on-site at locations across the region, ensuring that equipment and systems operate safely, reliably and in accordance with required technical standards.
Key responsibilities
- Install, configure, test and maintain intelligent transport systems, including traffic signals, variable message signs, CCTV, journey time systems and roadside communications equipment.
- Attend planned and reactive maintenance activities, diagnosing faults and completing repairs within agreed timescales.
- Carry out inspections, testing and commissioning of electrical, electronic, network and control systems.
- Interpret technical drawings, specifications, schematics and equipment manuals.
- Record work completed, test results, faults and remedial actions accurately using relevant reporting systems.
- Work closely with control room teams, contractors, suppliers and other technical stakeholders to resolve operational issues.
- Ensure all activities comply with health and safety requirements, traffic management procedures and quality standards.
- Participate in an out-of-hours call-out or standby rota where required.
About you
You will have practical experience in field-based engineering, ideally within highways, transport, telecommunications, electrical engineering or a similar technical environment. You should be confident working independently in challenging outdoor conditions, while also contributing effectively to a wider engineering team.
Applicants should have a relevant technical qualification or equivalent practical experience, together with a sound understanding of electrical and electronic systems, control equipment and data communications. Experience of fault-finding using test equipment, reading wiring diagrams and working with IP networks would be advantageous.
Additional requirements
A full UK driving licence is essential, and flexibility to travel between operational sites is required. The successful candidate must be comfortable working at height, near live traffic and in all weather conditions, with appropriate training and protective equipment provided. Strong communication skills, a methodical approach and a commitment to safe working practices are essential.
