You will lead multidisciplinary engineering and technical teams, setting clear objectives and fostering a culture of collaboration, professional development and continuous improvement. Working across projects, operations, maintenance and commercial functions, you will ensure that engineering decisions support long-term performance, passenger safety and network resilience.
Key responsibilities
- Set and implement the engineering strategy for signalling, train control and associated systems.
- Provide technical governance and assurance throughout the asset and project lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, safety requirements, industry standards and assurance processes.
- Lead the management of engineering risk, systems integration, configuration control and technical change.
- Oversee the performance, maintenance, renewal and improvement of signalling and train control assets.
- Develop capability, succession plans and professional standards across engineering teams.
- Manage budgets, resources, suppliers and delivery partners to achieve agreed outcomes.
- Build effective relationships with regulators, infrastructure partners, contractors and senior stakeholders.
- Promote innovation, data-led decision-making and improvements in reliability, efficiency and safety.
About you
You will be a professionally qualified engineer with substantial experience in railway signalling, train control or a closely related safety-critical environment. A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, systems engineering or a relevant discipline is expected, together with a record of leading large, technically diverse teams.
You will bring strong knowledge of signalling principles, control systems, systems engineering, assurance and asset management. The ability to interpret complex technical information, make balanced decisions and communicate clearly with audiences at all levels is essential. Experience of regulated infrastructure, major change programmes and supplier management would be highly advantageous.
This is an opportunity to shape engineering performance in a demanding and rewarding environment. Applications are welcomed from candidates who can demonstrate sound judgement, strategic thinking and a commitment to the highest standards of safety and professional integrity.
