Deputy Director of Water Resources

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Deputy Director of Water Resources to support the effective management, protection, and sustainable development of water resources. This senior role will contribute to the development and delivery of long-term water resource strategies, policies, and investment programmes, ensuring that water supplies remain resilient, secure, and environmentally responsible. The successful candidate will work across operational, technical, regulatory, and community-focused areas to address current and emerging challenges, including climate change, population growth, environmental pressures, and competing demands for water.

Key responsibilities will include supporting the leadership of water resource planning and management activities; overseeing the delivery of complex programmes, projects, and studies; and providing authoritative advice on water availability, demand forecasting, drought preparedness, flood risk, conservation, and environmental protection. You will help monitor performance, manage budgets and resources, assess risk, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, and professional standards. The role will also involve developing productive relationships with government bodies, regulators, technical specialists, community representatives, landowners, and other stakeholders. You will represent the water resources function at senior meetings and contribute to consultation, negotiation, and public engagement activities.

Applicants should have substantial experience in water resources management, hydrology, environmental planning, civil engineering, or a closely related discipline, together with a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience. Strong knowledge of water policy, regulation, resource modelling, catchment management, and climate resilience is highly desirable. You will need proven leadership experience, sound commercial and financial awareness, and the ability to translate complex technical information into clear recommendations for varied audiences. Excellent communication, collaboration, analytical, and decision-making skills are essential, as is the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in a complex, highly regulated environment. Professional accreditation or membership of a relevant institution would be advantageous.
