Road Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Road Engineer to contribute to the planning, design, delivery and maintenance of highways and associated transport infrastructure. The successful candidate will support projects from initial feasibility and concept development through to detailed design, construction and completion, ensuring that work is delivered safely, efficiently, sustainably and in accordance with relevant standards, specifications and statutory requirements.

Key responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing highway designs, alignment plans, pavement assessments, drainage proposals, junction layouts, traffic management arrangements and associated technical documentation. You will carry out site inspections and surveys, assess existing road conditions, identify risks and recommend appropriate engineering solutions. The role will also involve producing calculations, drawings, cost estimates, programmes and reports, while coordinating with contractors, consultants, utility providers, local authorities and other project stakeholders. You will monitor progress and quality, respond to technical queries, contribute to design reviews and help resolve construction issues.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, highway engineering or a related discipline, together with relevant professional experience in road or infrastructure projects. Knowledge of highway design principles, transport standards, pavement engineering, drainage, health and safety requirements and construction practices is essential. Experience using engineering design and project management software, along with the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications, would be advantageous. You should be organised, analytical and able to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, as is the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. A relevant professional membership or progress towards professional registration would be desirable, as would a full driving licence and willingness to attend project sites when required.
