Principal Battery Systems Engineer
Principal Battery Systems Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Principal Battery Systems Engineer to lead the development, integration and validation of advanced battery systems for next-generation electrified products. This is a senior technical position requiring strong systems engineering expertise, sound engineering judgement and the ability to guide projects from early concept through to production.
Key responsibilities
- Define battery system architecture, requirements, interfaces and verification strategies.
- Lead the integration of battery packs, battery management systems, thermal management, charging systems and vehicle or product controls.
- Translate customer, regulatory and performance objectives into robust technical specifications.
- Oversee system-level analysis, modelling, testing and validation, ensuring requirements are demonstrably met.
- Identify technical risks and develop effective mitigation plans across safety, performance, reliability and manufacturability.
- Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary engineering teams and support design reviews, investigations and problem-solving activities.
- Collaborate with specialists in electrical, mechanical, software, controls, manufacturing and compliance engineering.
- Contribute to engineering processes, standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
About you
You will have significant experience designing and developing rechargeable battery systems, ideally within the automotive, aerospace, energy storage, marine or another highly regulated engineering environment. You should be confident working across the full systems lifecycle and capable of making clear, evidence-based decisions in a complex technical setting.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in electrical, electronic, mechanical, automotive or systems engineering.
- Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery technologies, battery management systems and high-voltage architectures.
- Experience with requirements management, systems modelling, verification and validation.
- Understanding of functional safety, battery safety, hazard analysis and relevant industry standards.
- Ability to interpret test data, investigate failures and communicate technical conclusions clearly.
- Proven experience providing technical leadership without relying solely on formal authority.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
This role offers the opportunity to shape innovative battery technology, influence engineering strategy and make a significant contribution to the delivery of safe, efficient and high-performing electrified systems.
